First Baptist Church was founded in Ames in July, 1868. Rev. S. H. Mitchell (1830-1910), shown here, was the first resident minister of the church. Two non-resident ministers served before him--Rev. L.P. Day in 1868 and Rev. H.A. Borden in 1869. Rev.Mitchell served from 1870 to 1875. Rev. Mitchell was the father of Margaret Mitchell Brown, the second wife of Kendrick Wade Brown and the step-grandmother of Farwell T. Brown. This photograph is from Margaret Brown's family album.
