The Depot Hotel in Grand Junction, Iowa, as it probably appeared in 1873. This view looks north up the Des Moines Valley Railroad tracks. In February of 1873, passengers from a Chicago & North Western Railroad train that was stalled by heavy snow drifts were sheltered here for the storm's duration. The heavy snows had also stalled a southbound train several miles north of Grand Junction at the same time. This hotel was known by several names, including the "Railroad Hotel." The C & NW depot occupied the south side of the first floor (facing the mainline C & NW tracks). The Des Moines Valley depot can be seen further to the north on the left side of the track.
