Martin M. Morrison (1844-1916), a professional photographer from Ames, took this picture of the "Agricultural College, Ames" (note sign in the foreground) sometime in the late nineteenth century. Main Hall (also known as College Building, the College, and Old Main) is seen prominently a little left of center. Main Hall was built in 1864-1868. Its north wing burned in 1900 and its south wing burned in 1902. It was spring of 1903 before all the debris was removed. Old Main was replaced by the new Central Building (later to be known as Beardshear Hall). For a full description of Main Hall, see H. Summerfield Day's "The Iowa State University Campus and Its Buildings, 1859-1979," published in 1980 by Iowa State University. (This photo, courtesy of Robert L. Morrison, grandson of the photographer) (See also: 231.1329.1)
