Shortly after this photograph was taken, Carrie Chapman Catt, age 31, spoke on the topic of women's suffrage at the Congregational Church in Ames on April 25, 1890. Catt (1859-1947), an Iowa State College graduate in 1880, was one of the world leaders in the movement to obtain the right to vote for women. She also founded the League of Women Voters.
