Margaret Hall, built in 1895, and named to honor Margaret MacDonald Stanton, the wife of Dean Edgar M. Stanton. Margaret MacDonald had been Preceptress of Iowa State College in 1877 when she married Stanton, and her death on July 25, 1895, was the last of the original faculty of the college. The bells dedicated to her memory were originally to be mounted in the tower shown on the right in this photo, but it was discovered that the tower would provide neither adequate space nor the needed strength to house the bells. As a result, in 1897, the campanile was built for this purpose. Dinkey tracks can be seen in front of Margaret Hall. At the time this hall burned in 1938, it was providing housing for about 130 women students. On first floor to the right can be seen the arched window of the dining hall. (See also: 37.189.1)
