On August 11, 1898, Win Tilden (shown here with her bicycle), who was head of women's physical education at Iowa State College form 1904 to the mid-1940's, and Tot Bigelow rode their bicycles from Ames to Des Moines. They finished the ride in four hours. Wagon or carriage roads of that day were narrow with many turns and ruts, making bicycle riding a challenge. (See also 177.990.1-3)
