Dr. David Ghrist and his wife Dr. Jennie Ghrist moved to Ames in 1899 and purchased a home on the corner of Douglas Avenue and Seventh Street. For most of the twenty-six years they practiced medicine in Ames, they maintained an office above the Fair Store on the south side of Main (Onondaga) Street [today, 2004, that is the site of the Lazy M Shoe Store]. A professional advertisement in the February 6, 1902, "Ames Intellegencer" newspaper shows their speciality was the treatment of "diseases of women and children." In 1925, when they were in their sixties and approaching retirement, the doctors Ghrist moved to Glendale, California.
