A crew pauses while installing telephone wire in order to have their photograph taken with their wagons, horses, and mules on a dirt road somewhere near Ames in the early decade of the twentieth century. A roll of wire can be seen in the middle wagon and boots of the men standing in the front have attached metal spikes to help them climb the telephone poles.
