Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947) from a news article on the occasion of her arrival in New York City in 1920 after the passage of the nineteenth amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote. Mrs. Catt, who as Carrie Chapman had graduated from Iowa State College in Ames in 1880, had long led the fight for women's suffrage and was the founder in 1919 of the League of Women Voters.
