A primitive float, in the first Iowa State College VEISHEA parade in 1922, is moving past Morrill Hall with Engineering (Marston) Hall in the right center of the photograph. This float represents the mechanical engineering department at ISC. The riders in the float wear hats that are reminiscent of the engineers' costumes at St. Patrick Day parades in Ames, which had been annual events prior to VEISHEA. Patrick is the patron saint of engineers. VEISHEA was established to consolidate all the various festivals at Iowa State College into one grand institutional celebration. The name VEISHEA was suggested by Professor Frank D. Paine in 1909 and combined the first letters of the divisions of study at ISC as a symbol of unity and group effort.
