Taken in about 1925 in back of the house of Murray L. and Tecla Hutton at 909 Kellogg Avenue, this photograph shows three young friends from the neighborhood. Farwell Brown recalls that Tecla Hutton lined the boys up and took this picture one day when they had been constructing model airplanes together. From left to right are Bertel Smith, son of the Story County attorney Earl Smith and grandson of long-time Ames city clerk A. B. Maxwell (who lived across the street from the Huttons at 912 Kellogg Ave.); Donald Hutton, whose father Murray was a civil engineer with the Iowa Highway Commission; and Farwell Brown (who lived with his family at 1011 Kellogg). Farwell T. Brown was the oldest of this trio, having been born on December 17, 1910 (still living in 2005). Donald W. Hutton (6/23/1914-11/20/1998) later studied landscape architecture at Iowa State College and ultimately became the head of parks for Maricopa County, Arizona, and was responsible for the design of all the parks in Phoenix. Bertel Smith (2/13/1915-11/1987) as an adult lived in Des Moines where he owned a collection agency.
