The Kendrick W. Brown/Harry Farwell Brown family residence at 1011 Kellogg Avenue in 1925, shortly before K. W. Brown's death on April 30, 1926. The house was built in 1879. In 1918, the house was a duplex with 1009 being a home for Kendrick and his wife Margaret "Maggie" Mitchell Brown and 1011 being the home of K. W. Brown's son Harry Farwell Brown, his wife Mary "Mame" Tilden Brown, and their two children, Farwell and Josephine. Note the large maple tree in front of the house, to the left in the photograph. It was planted as a sapling when the house was built in 1879. The large boulders seen near the bushes and underneath the tall catalpa tree were purchased and installed to enhance the landscaping of the estate. When this house was first built, it was two blocks away from the nearest house. By the time of this photograph, in 1925, the house directly opposite it, across the back alley, was occupied by Judge C. G. Lee, Ames City Attorney from 1896 to 1902, and his family. After the Browns no longer occupied this house, it was converted to apartments, and eventually (in the 1990s) was razed. The site is now occupied by an apartment building.
