Charles F. Curtiss (1863-1946) grew up on a farm 10 miles north of the Iowa State College campus. He received a B.S. degree from the college in 1887, joined the faculty in 1891, and received his M.S. from ISC in 1894, one of three granted before the turn of the 20th century. Curtiss was made professor of animal husbandry in 1896 and head of the department in 1897. He also served as director of the experiment station and acting dean in 1897. In 1902, Curtiss was made Dean of Agriculture and Director of the Experiment Station at ISC and remained in the first position until 1932, when he returned to teaching and was named dean emeritous. Curtiss and his wife Olive and their daughters were residents of the Farm House on the campus of the college from 1896 until his death in 1946 (Olive preceded him in death in 1943).
