Lincoln Highway marker (with metal medallion of Abraham Lincoln) on the southeast corner of Beach Avenue and Lincoln Way (the present [2003] location of the Iowa State Center). These markers were placed along the route of the Lincoln Highway, from the east coast to the west coast, in the 1920s by members of the Boy Scouts of America. Farwell Brown, in 1928, was involved with this project and placed markers along the stretch of highway from Boone to Ames. Very few of these markers are left today, but they once marked old Highway 30 (then known as the Lincoln Highway) across the entire nation. Ames also had routes known as "the Wilson Highway" and "the Jefferson Highway" before the federal transportation agency adopted a numbering system for all interstate highways. (Photo was taken by Farwell Brown in 1998.)
