A monument in the Ames Municipal Cemetery, commemorating the veterans of the U.S. Civil War, was placed there by the Women's Relief Corps (WRC) and the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War (DUV) in 1930. (The Woman's Relief Corps was organized as an auxilary of the Grand Army of the Republic (Union Army veterans group) on July 25/26, 1883, in Denver, Colorado, and was incorporated by act of the U.S. Congress on September 7, 1962. The group is still active [2006] with its headquarters located in Springfield, Illinois. The DUV was incorporated on December 12, 1885 and is also still active and headquartered in Springfield, Illinois. It is presently named the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865.) This monument is located near the administration building at the cemetery. The inscription reads: LEST WE FORGET/1861-1865/DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THE VETERANS OF THE UNION ARMY AND ALL WHO GAVE THEIR BEST IN DEFENSE OF OUR NATION/SPONSORED BY THE W.R.C. AND D.U.V./1930.
