Looking north at the northeast corner of Grand Avenue and Fifth Street before the Grand Avenue underpass was constructed in 1937/38. The automobiles in the photograph place its date in the early 1930s. The home on the right (631 Fifth Street) is that of Dr. Clarence H.Covault, a professor of veterinary medicine at Iowa State College/University from 1919-1970. The Highway 69 marker is visible on the corner next to the fire plug and in front of the Fifth Street/Grand Avenue sign. Grand Avenue is seen as a two-lane street with curbside parking and huge shade trees.
