Bids for the construction of the Grand Avenue underpass were received in August, 1936. The contract was awarded to Ben Cole & Son of Ames. Looking southeasterly in this photo from the mainline of the railroad we can see the excavation partly completed. The Ames High School Field House, on the south side of Lincoln Way, at upper left, was in its prime. Kimler Coal & Ice office is at far left.
