Dr. Earl Bush was a division surgeon for the 34th Division of the National Guard and helped organize and commanded the 136th medical regiment of the division during World War I, retiring as a colonel in 1941. His unit served actively in the war. Earl Blaine Bush was born in Knoxville, Iowa, in 1884. He attended Iowa State College briefly, studied pharmacy at the old Highland Park College in Des Moines, and then graduated from Drake University's School of Medicine in 1908 and began practice immediately. For 25 years, Dr. Bush was a surgeon for the North Western Railroad. He was state surgeon for the Iowa National Guard from 1924 to 1927. A former head of the Story County Medical Society, he also served as president of the Iowa State Medical Society. Dr. Bush served on the Republican Party's state central committee; was an Ames City councilman, 1916-1918; and was a member of the Mary Greeley Board of Trustees. On April 15, 1911, Earl Bush married Edna Everett (2/14/1888-12/6/1941). They were the parents of four children: John, Joseph, Barbara, and Mary. Dr. Earl Bush died on Jan. 14, 1953, at the age of 68.
