When Margaret Hall was destroyed by fire on April 8, 1939, the women of Iowa State College lost their gymnasium, most of their equipment, and their swimming pool. Jean Vieth, from Oakland, a home economics major, class of 1939, was one of the three coeds who carried petitions, signed by over 1,000 ISC women, to the Iowa General Assembly to convince the legislators to approve appropriations for a women's gymnasium on campus.
