The house that stood near the corner, between Tenth and Eleventh Streets on the west side of Duff Avenue. The house originally belonged to Ames businessman D. A. Bigelow and later to John E. Foster. D. A. (interestingly, his middle name was Ames) Bigelow was born on November 24, 1839, in Chester, Massachusetts. He moved to Kewanee, Illinois, in 1856. In 1862, he enlisted in Company A, 124th Illnois Volunteers and served in the Civil War as an aide de camp on the staff of General Geddes. In August, 1868, he came to the new town of Ames, Iowa, returning in November to Kewanee to marry Sarah E. Moore and then to bring her to Ames. Bigelow owned a store on Onondaga (Main) Street with H. G. Huntington (this store later became the Tilden Store). He and Sarah had four children: Margaret M. (Tot), Robert E., Pearl C., and Alida J. D. A. Bigelow died on March 9, 1890. After his death his family continued to live in this house for some years. The house was removed for major hospital expansion in the 1950s and eventually the emergency entrance to Mary Greeley Medical Center came to be located here. (See also 127.700.1 and 140.774.2)
