Margaret Sloss in her laboratory at ISC in around 1948. Sloss was a pioneer among women in the field of veterinary medicine. Born in 1901 in Cedar Rapids, she grew up in Ames where her father Tom was superintendent of buildings and grounds at the college. She graduated from Ames High in 1919, received BS from ISC in 1923 and an MS in veterinary anatomy in 1932. In 1938 she became the first woman at Iowa State to earn a doctorate in veterinary medicine. She was always associated professionally with Iowa State, starting as a technician in 1923 and ultimately becoming a full professor in 1965. Sloss House (home of ISU's Women's Center) is named in her honor. (See article in Ames Tribune, March 25, 1985, p. 1) This photo taken by John Barry of Cedar Rapids. (See also: 118.652.2)
