This photograph, taken sometime in the 1950s, shows the Chicago & North Western Railroad switching yard, looking east from a point west of Grand Avenue. The huge storage building on the south side of the tracks was removed when the switching yard was moved to an area several miles east of Ames. The signal tower is the tall structure to the right of the tracks. Photograph, courtesy of J. W. Hohenshelt of Boone, Iowa.
