Ames High School on the west side of Clark Avenue opened for classes in the fall of 1939. This photo, with students sitting and standing to the right of the main entrance, was probably taken around 1955, given the students' style of clothing. This building served as the high school until a new building was constructed at Twentieth Street and Ridgewood Avenue. When the new building opened in 1961, this building became Central Junior High School, which it was until the middle school came into existence in the fall of 1986. At that time the building was vacant until it was renovated and opened as the new Ames City Hall in April, 1990.
