State Highway patrolman Charles W. Elliott is shown being assisted as he leaves the Ames City Hall (the Municipal Building at Fifth Street and Kellogg Avenue) following the bombing of May 22, 1970. The explosion cost Elliott the loss of sight in his left eye. Municipal Court Judge John L. McKinney is shown emerging from the front door. Assistant Ames Police Chief Tom Lyttle (in the hat) is seen standing next to McKinney. Francis Hunter, a power plant operator, is shirtless, having just given his shirt to Elliott to staunch his wound. Ames animal control officer Marland Dass is in the upper right-hand part of the photo, standing next to the brick wall. Others in the photograph are not identified. No one was killed in the attack, though several were injured. The perpetrators of the bombing were never identified.
