Ray C.Cunningham and his wife Ethel, perhaps on the occasion of their sixtieth wedding anniversary in 1978. Ray and Ethel Hutchinson were married on May 11,1918. From 1919-1926, Ray Cunningham was the assistant secretary of the YMCA at the University of Minnesota. In 1926, the Cunninghams moved to Ames where Ray was the general secretary for the YMCA at Iowa State College until his retirement in 1953. He then served on the Ames School Board and the City Playground Commission (later known as the Parks and Recreation Commission). From 1959-1964, Ray Cunningham was a Story County representative to the Iowa General Assembly where he served on the powerful appropriations committee. During that time, he was instrumental in obtaining state funding for two new schools in Ames. Ethel and Ray had two sons, Glen and Wayne, who were both killed in action during World War II. Ray Cunningham was born on July 14, 1893 and died in November, 1986; Ethel was born on October 24, 1893 and died in July, 1984.
