This photograph of Bertha Bosma Moore (1892-1986) was taken on October 7, 1981, when she was 89 years old. Bertha Bosma was born in the the Netherlands and came to the United States in 1914, when she was 22. In 1925, she married Fern T. Moore (1897-1968), a foreman at the O'Neil Dairy in Ames. Bertha was a 1921 graduate of the nursing program in Iowa City and was on the staff of the Mary Greeley Hospital. In 1932, her husband established the Moore Dairy, first on South Kellogg Avenue and later, on the corner of Fifth Street and Clark Avenue. Fern and Bertha also operated a 90-acre dairy farm on the property that would become Moore Park, on the west end of 24th Street, just north of the Veenker Memorial Golf Course. Bertha Moore died in October, 1986, at the age of 94. The farm the Moores had owned was a gift to the City of Ames under the terms of Bertha's will, which stipulated that certain "improvements" had to be made to the property within 3 years. These improvements included the building of a playground and a parking area. The park was dedicated on June 25, 1992.
