This photograph of a framed needlepoint was taken by Farwell T. Brown in 1981 in the Winona Lake (Indiana) home of evangelist Billy Sunday (full name, William Ashley Sunday). Billy Sunday was born in a tiny log cabin near Ames on November 19, 1862. He was the third child of Mary Jane (known as "Jennie") Cory (sometimes, spelled Corey) and William Sunday (the son of German immigrant parents named Sonntag). Note the alternative spelling of Sunday on the needlepoint, Sundy. Father William died of a virulent form of measles while serving as a private in the 23rd Iowa Volunteers Infantry in Missouri in December, 1862. Martin (known as "Squire") Cory was the father of Jennie Sunday. Jennie Sunday was remarried in 1864 to a Nevada (Iowa) farmer named Leroy Heizer and she had two more children, Leroy, Jr., and Elizabeth "Libbie" Heizer. She was married a third time and at the time of her death in 1916 was named Mary Jane "Jennie" Stowell. For further information on Billy Sunday's family, see "Preacher; Billy Sunday and Big-Time American Evangelism," by Roger A. Bruns, 1992. (See also: 119.654A.1)
