William John Bennett, the National Drug Czar appointed by President George Herbert Walker Bush, speaks to an audience of around 150 people assembled on the lawn of the Youth Recovery House, 804 Kellogg Avenue, on October 10, 1989. Bennett is standing with a microphone at a podium on the back porch of the house. He is flanked by Recovery House residents Bart and Therese (known only by these names in accordance with Recovery House's policy of anonymity) who served as Bennett's escorts during his visit to Ames. The Youth Recovery House is part of Youth & Shelter Services {YSS}of Story County. Early in the 1980s, YSS took on the administrative responsibility in the county for the aftercare of adolescents who have been treated for alcohol and drug addiction. Up to this time, adolescent chemical dependency had been largely unrecognized and undiagnosed. YSS continues to operate Iowa's largest such program.
