Up goes the new sign proclaiming the new name of the road connecting R50 and R38 in western Story County. In March, 1989, the Story County Board of Supervisors designated it Cameron School Road to honor a pioneer, Henry C. Cameron, who had acquired 160 acres of land near the site from the federal government in 1852. He and his wife Amanda J. Hussong Cameron farmed the land. They had a schoolhouse built on the property in 1854, no doubt to help educate their eight children. That schoolhouse was replaced in 1872 with a brick building which was in use until around 1950. It was destroyed by fire in 1956. In this photograph, the man facing the camera and holding up the post on the right side is Art Smith, of Nevada (Iowa). The man in profile in the lower right of the photograph is Del Jespersen of Ames. Others in the photograph cannot be identified.
