Farwell Tilden Brown, a life-long resident of Ames, is a man who has devoted his retirement years to gathering and assembling the history of his community. Mr. Brown contributed his lifetime collection of original photographs, postcards, advertisements, news articles, and memorabilia to the Ames Public Library in 1989. In 1993, Brown published "Ames-The Early Years in Word and Picture," a collection of 55 stories that highlight the Ames community and its people with an emphasis on the first 75 years of the town's life. In 1999, he published "Ames in Word and Pictures; Further Tales and Personal Memories, Book Two" with 49 additional stories. Mr. Brown was born in Ames, Iowa, on December 17, 1910 to Harry and Mary Tilden Brown. He graduated from Ames High School in 1929 and from Iowa State University in 1934 with a major in agriculture economics. In 1940, he married Ruth Mosher in Urbana, Illinois. On January 1, 1976, he retired from his postion as real estate appraiser for the Iowa Department of Transportation.
