Emma McCarthy Lee (1865-1949) was the daughter of Ames pioneers Daniel and Mary Ann (Ross) McCarthy and a graduate of Iowa State College. She was a charter member and president of the Ames Woman's Club and served as assistant postmaster for 3 years. She was active in the city's social activities, and in 1897 married Judge C. G. Lee, a lawyer who served as judge of the 11th judicial district from 1907 until 1914. In 1949, Judge Lee donated the money for the designation of Emma McCarthy Lee Park. This photograph, taken in 1995 by Farwell T. Brown, is of the sign at the entrance of the park.
