Program Details
On Friday, September 17, students from ISU’s Department of Landscape Architecture, in partnership with the Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the City of Ames, and Ames Main Street, will build six small parklets throughout downtown Ames. The project is part of Park(ing) Day, a global effort to highlight the importance of pedestrian-friendly spaces in urban areas.
Students will design and build each parklet on campus, then install them in a parking stall in Downtown Ames. This year, students have partnered with six businesses to help shape the direction of the parklet: Ames Public Library, Chocolaterie Stam, Dog-Eared Books, Everts Flowers, Nook & Nest, and the Octagon Community Gallery. The student teams met with each business to discuss their mission and vision and are now working to turn that vision into a small public park. To see their finished work, stop by Downtown Ames on Friday, September 17 to experience the six parklets and talk to the students about this important event.
Check out the Library's parklet near the corner of 5th Street and Douglas Avenue!
