Join Ruth Harkin, author of the new book When My Husband Ran for President and Other Short Stories, for a talk and book signing.

Mention the Harkin name in Iowa and most will recognize it because of Iowa’s long-time US Senator and Congressman Tom Harkin. However, Ruth Harkin has an incredible legacy of her own. In fact, she was the first one elected to public office during their marriage. Whether it was navigating the working world as a woman, or supporting her husband's 1992 presidential campaign, Ruth shares the stories of her life through endearing prose.

Harkin, one of the first female prosecutors elected in the United States, served as Story County attorney from 1973-1979. She held numerous roles at the state and federal level, and was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 2018. She and her husband founded the Harkin Institute located in Des Moines.
