Program Details

The Iowa State University Department of History, in partnership with the Ames History Museum and Ames Public Library, will host Jeff Bremer, author of A New History of Iowa, at the Library.

Jeff Bremer's A New History of Iowa is the first new history of the state since the 1990s. It is the most comprehensive history of Iowa ever written, surveying the state from the last ice age 13,000 years ago until the end of 2020. The book is the result of nine years of research and is based on more than 1,000 sources.

While this is often a history of Iowa’s white majority, it is also a history of Native people, African Americans, Latinas and Latinos, Asian Americans, the LGBTQ community, and Iowa’s other ethnic and religious groups. It is often the story of rural areas and agriculture, topics that are emphasized throughout the book.
