Free Books For Students at Grab and Go Meal Sites

Free Books For Students at Grab and Go Meal Sites

Ames families will again have access to free books on Fridays at four grab and go meal sites: Meeker, Mitchell, Sawyer, and the Ames Public Library. The location for Ames Public Library is at the south end of the alley behind the Library. Vehicles enter the alley from 6th Street. Pedestrians should approach from 5th Street between Douglas Avenue and Kellogg.

One book per week per student will be distributed for students in grades pre-K through 12. Scheduled dates are July 17, 24, 31 and August 7, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Books were purchased by the Ames Public Library Friends Foundation and are individually packaged according to grade-level appropriateness.

Procedures for book pick-up are:

  • Remain in your car and proceed to the designated area for book pick-up.
  • Please place a sign in your front passenger side window with the grade level of student(s)/book request needed (e.g. PK, 1st, 2nd, etc.)
  • Roll down your window and quickly grab the resources from the volunteer at the site. Please do not exit your vehicle during pick-up.

This is a collaborative project between the Ames Community School District, Ames Public Library Friends Foundation, Rotary of Ames, and United Way of Story County. Leadership Ames provided many volunteers to help sort, label, and prepare books for distribution. Thanks to this wonderful partnership, during the school closure period in the spring, 4,780 books were distributed to families.
