Summer Is for Grownups Too

Summer Is for Grownups Too

by Megan Klein-Hewett

Summer is an exciting time at Ames Public Library, filled with fun and exciting programs for all ages. In adult services, we focus on bringing engaging and educational programming to our adult community members. This summer we’ve been lucky to host a number of talented guests, with more still to come!

First up, join Ames Public Library, Ames Pride, and Dog-Eared Books in welcoming author, poet and essayist, Diana Goetsch. Diana’s 2022 memoir, “This Body I Wore, explores the author’s journey through gender transition as an adult, and the growth of the trans community in the late 20th century. Diana will present her acclaimed memoir in the Library’s Auditorium on Thursday, July 27, at 7 pm.

A “Washington Post” Best Book of the Year, and named as a must-read by “The New York Times,” “The Chicago Tribune,” “Glamour,” and more, Goetsch’s memoir sheds light on today’s struggle for trans equality. Books are available locally through Dog-Eared Books with limited copies available for purchase at the event. The reading and talk will be followed by a Q&A discussion and book signing.

Next, join Ricki King to learn about Iowa’s Black Pioneers on August 3rd at 7 pm in the Library’s Auditorium or on Zoom. These pioneers arrived in Iowa between 1830 and 1900 and included both enslaved and free people. Learn more about the lives of these farmers, miners, and community members from King, a certified genealogist and founder of Roots to Branches Genealogy. King is also the Vice President of the Iowa Historical Foundation.

As summer programming winds down, join us for Japanese Taiko Drumming on August 22nd at 6:30 in the Library’s Auditorium. This free, interactive workshop will include a demonstration of Taiko drum playing, as well as information about the importance of Taiko drumming in Japanese history and culture. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to play Japanese Taiko drums through arm movements and vocal exercises without hitting a drum.

Don’t forget, the Summer Reading Challenge is open to all ages! There’s still plenty of time to earn prizes for reading, including entries into our grand prize drawings. Get started online at amespubliclibrary.beanstack.org or pick up a reading game board at the Library.
