International Friendship Fair Brings Cultures Together in Ames
By Chelsie Gohlmann
Since 1992, the YWCA Ames-ISU has partnered with the Ames community to host the International Friendship Fair (IFF), a celebration of global cultures and community spirit. This year, the tradition continues on Saturday, March 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Ames Public Library.
The IFF offers a welcoming space where community members of all ages can experience the richness and diversity of cultures from around the world. Visitors will explore interactive exhibits, cultural displays, and engaging activities. From hands-on crafts and multicultural games, to music, stories, and unique traditions, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Volunteers from the Ames and Iowa State University (ISU) communities are at the heart of this event, sharing personal perspectives and cultural insights. Past fairs have featured information on geography, art, music, language, and traditional crafts, all presented by individuals eager to promote cross-cultural understanding and build bridges in the community.
Interested in sharing your culture? Volunteers are still being welcomed! Whether you want to present on your own, with a friend, or as a family, your contribution helps make the event special. To sign up as a volunteer, visit https://forms.gle/H8jmkXoTNcrqD7Ne8.
In addition to being a fun and educational afternoon, the International Friendship Fair helps dispel cultural stereotypes and fosters meaningful connections between residents, students, and families. Volunteers also have the opportunity to strengthen their English conversation and presentation skills in a supportive and welcoming setting.
Whether you’re looking to learn something new, meet neighbors from diverse backgrounds, or simply enjoy a vibrant celebration of cultures, the International Friendship Fair is free and open to all. For event details, visit www.AmesPL.org/event/international-friendship-fair-54570.
Unable to make this event date? Don’t worry, YWCA-Ames-ISU is hosting another International Friendship Fair on April 26th at the ISU campus.
